Victim’s friend spotted items for sale in coin and jewelry shop

A 28-year-old man was charged Friday with stealing a shotgun and more than $55,000 worth of precious metals from a Lower Macungie home, state police at Fogelsville said.

Robert Anthony Shaul of Lower Macungie allegedly entered the home of Thelma Holland at Valley Stream Lane three or four times while she was on vacation in July, police said. Shaul used a security code, police said. Shaul’s girlfriend is Holland’s niece, and the niece knew the code, police said.

After stealing the items, which included a sterling silver tea and coffee server and gold jewelry, he sold them to a coin and jewelry shop in Northampton. A friend of Holland who knew she collected antique flatware told her about the shop, and Holland found out her items had been taken there.

Shaul, of 5519 Spring Ridge W., is charged with three counts of burglary, three counts of theft, three counts of receiving stolen property and one count of fleeing or attempting to elude police. He was arraigned before District Judge Charles Crawford and was sent to Lehigh County Prison under $50,000 bail.

Holland realized her home had been burglarized on July 14, the day she returned from vacation. She said she was missing Tiffany “Flemish” pattern flatware, including a punch bowl set with cups, ladle and a base tray and a sterling silver tea and coffee server, valued at a total of $55,000. She said she was also missing a short-barreled shotgun, valued at $200, and $1,200 worth of gold jewelry, she told police.

She told her friend about the burglary and he told her that he found similar items at the Northampton Coin and Jewelry Shop. Police learned that the items at the jewelry shop were sold to the shop by Shaul. Police said Shaul made five transactions at the shop and used his driver’s license as identification.

Holland knew of Shaul because he was dating her niece, who has the key pad code to gain entry into her home. State police found no signs of forced entry at her home.

On Sunday, a state trooper went to the niece’s home to serve an arrest warrant and saw Shaul pulling out of the driveway. The trooper activated his emergency lights and siren, but Shaul fled, blowing past two stop signs before he turned into a cul-de-sac, police said. Shaul got out of his car and ran across several yards and streets before finally giving up.

In June 2004, Shaul assaulted and attempted to rob the owner of an Allentown dollar store of a bank deposit, and while fleeing police, he climbed out of a three-story apartment window and clung to the sill. He was arrested, convicted and served more than a year in prison, according to court records.
