Charlie Strange is no stranger to theater productions. Throughout his life he has seen, performed in and directed multiple shows.

But the Boston native, who moved to Temple Terrace with his wife, Leslie, and two children in the mid-1990s, admits "Leading Ladies," the play he is presently directing is, by far, tiffany necklaces sale, the most amusing of them all.

"It’s unbelievably funny; hysterical," said Strange, key rings, who oversees a cast of eight in the upcoming Masque Community Theatre production at the University Area Community Center beginning Sept. 10.

"Leading Ladies," by playwright Ken Ludwig, who also authored "Lend Me a Tenor" and "Moon Over Buffalo," is set amid the Amish town of York, Pa. It follows the adventures of Leo and Jack, two Shakespearean actors who are down on their luck and hoping to dig themselves out of the poorly-received Moose Lodge circuit. Their major dilemma, however, thanksgiving day 2010, is that they barely share a dollar between them.

According to Strange, each scene in the play becomes funnier and more complicated in the slapstick-style comedy.

Ron Pandolfo who portrays Leo, and Glen Wyeth, in the role of Jack, are best friends in real life. They got to know one another in junior high, where they were both involved in theater productions.

While Pandolfo is a seasoned performer at Masque, it’s Wyeth’s first gig with the theater. It’s also the first time they’ve performed together as adults.

It was Pandolfo, of Brandon, who convinced his buddy from Spring Hill to try out for the part.

"I knew he’d do a great job with it," Pandolfo said, "and when I thought about who I would most like to take down with me in this role it was Glen."

Mary Striby, cast as Meg is also experiencing her first stint with Masque.

She auditioned and began rehearsals for the play during a period when Masque was packing up and moving from its longtime home at the south end of Terrace Plaza to make room for renovations to the building during the first phase of city’s downtown redevelopment project. The group’s new rehearsal digs at the northern end of the plaza are scheduled for improvements at a later date.

"It’s been an interesting experience, but I think adversity creates a good production because you have to be creative," said Striby, a seasoned dancer who has performed in several other theater productions in Plant City and Valrico.

Autumn Barthelemy, who plays Audrey, a roller-skating waitress, tiffany Pendants for sale, has performed in two other Masque productions. She also is a Masque board member charged with handling public relations.

"I love playing this character because she’s fun and funny. It’s funny, too, because I ice skate but I had never roller-skated before," she said.

IF YOU GO

A Girardville woman admitted Thursday in Schuylkill County Court that she stole more than $163,tiffany,000 from an elderly Shenandoah woman from 2006 through 2008.

Michelle A. Connors, 39, pleaded guilty to two counts each of theft and receiving stolen property in connection with taking $163,358.93 from Mary O’Connell.

Judge Jacqueline L. Russell, who accepted Connors’ plea, did not immediately sentence her, instead ordering a presentence investigation. Russell did not set a sentencing date, but said she definitely would need more information before approving the plea.

"I had questions about the plea," Russell said. "I need more information to justify whether this is an appropriate sentence."

Neither prosecutors nor James G. Conville, Schuylkill Haven, Connors’ lawyer, would say what the proposed sentence under the plea agreement would be.

Russell could reject the agreement, in which case Connors would either withdraw her plea and take the case to trial or allow the judge to impose any sentence permissible under the law. The maximum possible sentence would be 14 years in a state correctional institution and $30,000 in fines.

Connors remains free on $5,000 bail pending sentencing. She said nothing while leaving Russell’s courtroom, and people with her tried to obstruct photographers attempting to take her picture.

Shenandoah police and the Schuylkill County District Attorney’s Elder Abuse Unit charged Connors with taking the money from O’Connell, who was 89 when the incidents allegedly started, between November 2006 and September 2008.

Investigators said the thefts occurred while Connors had power of attorney for O’Connell.

Connors took over the woman’s assets, which totaled $222,692.61, in November 2006 and had control of the money until Sept. 11, 2008, prosecutors said.

During that time, Connors,Beads necklace, who befriended O’Connell at Shenandoah Manor, bought items including a camera, computer and a cell phone using money from the woman’s account, according to prosecutors. Connors worked at Shenandoah Manor and O’Connell lived there, bracelets, prosecutors said.

Connors also made numerous ATM withdrawals and large counter withdrawals from the bank, including $5,000 that she used to fix a roof, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors said Connors also withdrew $10,000 she said was to prepay for O’Connell’s funeral. The prepayment was actually $7,110 and Connors never returned the remaining $2,890,key rings, according to prosecutors.

Conville and Assistant District Attorney Robert P. Frantz each declined to comment on the case after the hearing.

County Detective Dorothy "Dolly" Malec, a member of the Elder Abuse Unit, said the case serves as a reminder about potential dangers in the handling of money.

"I believe this is a good warning not only to senior citizens but to anyone," she said. "We give training to law enforcement, bangles, clergy and home health care workers as to what to look for."Defendant: Michelle A.
Edgar Ibarra Jr. is a typical 8-year-old boy, who is into cars, airplanes and superheroes. He’s shy with strangers but curious as to how things work. Meeting him for the first time, it is hard to notice that Edgar has spina bifida, a neural tube defect developed while in the womb.

Little did Edgar know when he woke up on Aug. 20 that he would be spending the day at Laughlin AFB with the 85th Flying Training Squadron and become a "Pilot for a Day".

"Every time we go in or out of town, he likes to see the planes from the base. So it was real exciting for him," said Edgar’s mother Angelic Martinez.

The "Pilot for a Day" program gives terminally ill or disabled children the opportunity to experience a day in the life of a pilot at Laughlin. Every "Pilot for a Day" is specially designed to meet the needs and wants of the child participating, which makes it a day like no other.

"We’ve been doing this now for about six years and every one of these is different,Atlas charm bracelet," said Sharlene Perez, Department of State Health Services, earrings, Children with Special Health Care Needs employee.

"We tailor the program to what he would dig and not dig. Every agency on base loves to get involved. It’s been an awesome experience," said Capt. Winfield Scott, an 85th FTS, T-6 instructor pilot and coordinator for Edgar’s day.

For Edgar’s special day, he and his family had breakfast with Airmen from the 85th FTS,key rings, watched a military working dog demonstration, took a tour of the fire department and air traffic control tower and explored a T-6 Texan II aircraft. He even received his own flight suit, cap, watches, coin and spare patches from other squadrons.

Following his favorite meal, pepperoni pizza, Edgar could wait no longer; it was time for him to fly his own T-6 simulator.

"He’s been giving thumbs up all day,Beads necklace," said Perez.

When asked how his day went, Edgar responded bashfully, "Good. Everything was good." For any query with respect to this article or any other content requirement, please contact Editor at htsyndication@hindustantimes.com

The membership drive will take place from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday at Aiken Mall. Troops open to girls in K5 through 12th grades will have information tables, Girl Scout cookies, crafts, demonstrations and other activities at the mall.

Area Girl Scout troops are also looking for adult volunteers and troop leaders. Scheduling for adult volunteers is flexible, key rings, according to Bonnie Boucek of the Aiken/Edgefield Girl Scouts. Girls interested in participating in Scouting on an individual basis can join the Juliette program, which is designed to accommodate even the busiest young woman’s schedule.

Grace McKittrick, earrings, Lori Rios and Katherine Fitzmeyer pitched a tent Friday afternoon in the middle of Jacksonville Beach so they could be first in line for the 17th annual Back to School with BEAM giveaway.

They were eager to shop — for free — for clothing and school supplies at the Beaches Emergency Assistance Ministry event that helps needy families get their children ready for the new school year.

When volunteers opened the gate at 8 a.m. Saturday at Beach United Methodist Church, the three women walked through with big smiles. For the next several hours, about 1,100 children and their families filed through behind them.

"We pitched a tent right next to the gate," said McKittrick, of Atlantic Beach, a single parent of an 8-year-old son. "This helps me tremendously. It takes off some of the pressure of finding school clothes that I can’t get right now because of my bills. The rent is due and I have to pay my electric and car insurance. It’s tough."

The giveaway serves struggling Beaches families with children in preschool through high school, who registered with proof or address and their children’s identities as they entered. Each student received 10 pieces of new or gently used clothing, new socks and underwear, new backpacks, a bag of school supplies and three new or gently used books.

Each family also received a bag of groceries donated by Second Harvest. The children could also get free haircuts from volunteer barbers and school physicals donated by St. Vincent’s Mobile Care Van, which is funded by The Players Championship golf tournament.

The event was organized and run with the help of hundreds of volunteers from around the Beaches, who collected donations for months and set up shop several days in advance of the one-day giveaway that lasted until 1 p.m.

When families entered the church’s vast family life center, they encountered a room full of clothing organized on tables according to size and gender. Volunteers at each table helped them select items, which they put in new shopping bags donated by Wal-Mart. Then they went to the underwear area for socks, underwear and shoes, and to the backpack section where they could select from a variety of colors and sizes.

The idea is to hold a one-day back-to-school shopping experience for families, said Karen Wolfson of Atlantic Beach, who founded the event. "It’s shopping for school; it’s just that you’re not paying any money."

"It’s been an exciting thing to see it develop," said Wolfson, for whom the giveaway has always been a family affair. Her husband, Don, mother,Beads necklace, Marion Read, and children Lance, Erin, and Kymberly help out.

The first year, about 25 volunteers served about 250 children by giving away clothing, Karen Wolfson said. "It grew over time, key rings," and with "so many people in the community helping out, it’s fabulous. The beach community is amazing."

The idea behind the event hasn’t changed, she said.

"The whole purpose is to raise the self esteem of the children, so they can go to school like everybody else with new shoes, bangles, underwear, backpacks and clothes," she said.

"It helps families financially, and it helps the children feel they are not any different from everybody else."

Maggie FitzRoy can also be reached at (904) 249-4947, ext. 6320.

A Beaufort County Council committee unanimously recommended the change Tuesday that would allow for more shops in the Oakwood I and Oakwood II centers.

Oakwood manager Jane Hincher applied for village-center zoning that would allow more flexibility in finding tenants. The current community preservation and professional office district zoning of the 2.14-acre property between Miller Drive and Mayfair Court on the west side of Sams Point Road mostly limits the buildings to use as office space or services.

Those uses would still be allowed under the village zoning, which also would allow retail stores.

The Natural Resources Committee’s recommendation Tuesday followed unanimous votes of approval from the county Preservation Committee, the Planning Commission and the Lady’s Island/St. Helena Island Subcommittee. The issue goes next to the County Council for final consideration.

Sams Point Road already has stores that have been grandfathered in since Oakwood I was developed in 1983. The center is beside an area zoned village center to the south, watches, which last year was rezoned to allow retail stores. The Valero gas station along Sam’s Point Road to the east of the properties would also be included in the proposed rezoning.

The Natural Resources Committee also recommended on Tuesday the following items be approved:

–Change the May River Community Preservation District to rural community preservation zoning to limit development and preserve the character of the May River Road corridor in Bluffton. The amendment was a result of five years of work and discussions by the May River Community Preservation Committee,Charm bracelet, according to county planning director Tony Criscitiello.

–Amend the zoning and development standards ordinance to allow varietystores, rings, such as Family Dollar or Dollar General, smaller than 10,000 square feet in rural business districts. They would have to be at least five miles apart, key rings, under the proposal.

–Amend the same ordinance to allow historic buildings — defined as those more than 50 years old — to be renovated and reused through a special-use permit rather than torn down.

A statewide conference on "Explosion of Youth Problems–Crisis and Solutions" Wednesday, tiffany, July 28, at Westminster College in Salt Lake City will feature an 11:00 AM news conference with Attorney General Mark Shurtleff, Four-Star General/former U.S. Drug Czar Barry McCaffrey, the Chairman of the nation’s largest behavioral treatment provider, CRC Health Group, Dr. Barry Karlin, and a special Introduction by Utah First Lady Jeanette Herbert. A parent and student will also speak. The public is invited at no charge (see also <http://www.newsrx.com/library/topics/Mental-Health.html> Mental Health).

Four-Star Gen. McCaffrey, former National Drug Policy Director, said, "This is a national crisis. Mental health issues can manifest into a host of behaviors including drug and alcohol abuse which is growing at an alarming rate. Utah’s treatment gap for drug and alcohol abuse among all ages is 178,000; only 15,000 receive treatment. Almost 100,000 Utah youth 12-25 need but do not receive treatment."

Dr. Barry Karlin, the Chairman and CEO of CRC Health Group, the country’s largest behavioral treatment organization with 145 facilities, including nine in Utah specializing in helping troubled youth, said, "The conference will create greater awareness of the explosion of problems facing young people today. We’re bringing together clinical experts, providers, parents, families, local government, safety leaders, and the public to discuss the range of co-occurring issues affecting youth including drugs, depression, bullying, runaways, unemployment, key rings, finances, and behavior and thoughts threatening health and life. We want more people aware of the importance of treatment and prevention."

Attorney General Shurtleff has had personal family experience with serious youth problems and the benefits of treatment and family involvement, and the First Lady has been an advocate and leader of many effective programs assisting troubled youth.

>From 10-11 AM,Charm pendant, there will be a display, also open to the media, bangles, of ways to deal with problems, and solutions and programs that can be utilized. Following the 11 AM news conference, media is invited to join the experts and attendees at an informal lunch at noon.

The economic downturn is breaking the heart of many in Jacksonville who expect revenues to decrease this Valentine’s Day. The holiday falling on Saturday is a further blow to florists, but may help some restaurants.

Consumers nationwide are scaling back as spending for the holiday is predicted to fall to $28.6 billion, down 4.8 percent for 2008, according to the research firm IBISWorld Inc. The firm expects couples will choose chocolates or greeting cards instead of pricier gifts, such as jewelry and expensive dinners.

Alan Crown of Jacksonville usually buys his wife a gift and takes her out to dinner, but not this year.

“Times are tough and money’s tight,” said Crown, 61, as he peeked through the tiffany window of a St. Johns Town Center shop. “We cut back the dinner because we agreed it was overdoing it.”

‘The luxury items will suffer’

More expensive gifts like jewelry and clothes are expected to take the biggest hit, while sales for smaller items such as candy and greeting cards will thrive, said Paul Mason, an economics professor at the University of North Florida.

“It’s no different than any other holiday,” he said. “When the economy is weak, people will still buy gifts, but the luxury items will suffer. ”

With Valentine’s Day falling on a Saturday this year, florists are expecting big losses. The majority of their holiday business comes from office deliveries, according to local florist shop owners.

February sales for Kuhn Flowers, which has three Northeast Florida locations, were down 10 percent in 2008, and the company is expecting another double-digit decrease this year, said co-owner Rick Graham.

“Valentine’s Day is about making a splash,” Graham said. “People want to get something that earrings everyone in the office will be talking about, so it does hurt that it’s not on a weekday.”

Along with Christmas, Valentine’s Day brings the most revenue to Kuhn Flowers, so a down season can really hurt, he said.

To combat the loveless economy, the florist is dropping prices and offering bouquets for each price range. The company is selling a dozen roses delivered for $54.99, which is $25 less than the usual price.

“Last year, guys in construction and real estate would come in with wads of cash, and we know that won’t be the case this year,” Graham said. “So we’re trying to offer something for everyone and products at all price points.”

Flowers by Pat on Edgewood Avenue South is expecting similar results, so the company reduced its stock order.

Owner Pat Cyrus said she expects only about three-quarters of last year’s revenue.

“We know the economy is bad and a lot of people lost their jobs,” she said. “People still need to buy something, they’re just not going lavish.”

But some Jacksonville businesses are more optimistic about the calendar.

While retail wine sales are down at the Grape, a Jacksonville restaurant, wine bar and wine retailer, holiday meal reservations are booked.

General manager Kris Chislett attributes the success to the holiday’s date.

“It’s a godsend that Valentine’s Day fell on a weekend,” he said. “It will offset the negative effects of the economy, which has taken its toll.”

Chocolatiers are also expecting good results.

Peterbrooke spokesman Chris Sams said he hopes more people will be inclined to buy a $20 box of chocolates than a $100 piece of jewelry.

From Feb. 1 to Feb. 10, sales at the chocolate company are up 2 percentage points compared key rings to the same time last year, he said.

But Peterbrooke’s busiest days of the year are yet to come — today and Saturday.

Sams said sales on these two days could make or break Valentine’s Day revenues, which bring in about 20 percent of the company’s overall business.

And the economy isn’t just affecting retailers. Jacksonville residents are also pinching pennies this holiday.

Justin Rose, 23, and his girlfriend are not celebrating the holiday at all.

“She and I came to an agreement,” he said. “The money needs to be spent on bills and other priorities.”

Freedom bracelet – `It’s a part of our history’

By Vicki T. Lee

Baltimore AFRO Staff

For many, the idea of wearing jewelry akin to what our ancestors wore during slavery, is considered insulting to African-American strides.

Contrary to that belief, a local company believes that a visual reminder of our not-so-distant past will instill a more focused future.

Ujaama Inc. is a family-owned business that produces the Freedom Bracelet, a sterling silver bracelet made in the likeness of a shackle. Company president Shawn Baker doesn’t view the significance of the bracelet as a return to the past, rather an insight into the future.

“It’s a part of my history,” Mr. Baker said. “It’s not to relive, but to remember how far we have to go.”

The Freedom bracelet was the brainchild of Mr. Baker and his brother Gor’Don as they were traveling through Winston-Salem, N.C. on their way back from a CIAA basketball tournament in 1992. During the ride, they closely examined the lengthy journey of our ancestors in their quest for a better life and compared it with the present day African-American community. In the face of alcoholism, drug addiction, imprisonment, and the separation of the Black family, the freedom bracelet is meant to make every African-American individually responsible for the struggles still before us.

Rather than awaiting a leader, Mr. Baker stated that “it will take a collective effort” to tiffany and co break the mental chains enslaving the Black community.

Each freedom bracelet is made with the last link broken, showing the African American break from the chains of slavery. On the inside of the bracelet is the Ujaama, Inc. emblem and a number indicating how many bracelets have been made. The purchaser of a bracelet also receives a certificate of authenticity and a deed of commemoration.

Ujaama, the fourth principle of Kwanzaa, was formed in 1997 with the mission of “rais[ing] the consciousness of all nations, to keep cognizant the unerring truth of the contributions made to society and to the world by the African-American people.”

The freedom bracelet provokes a mixture of comments and opinions according to Mr. Baker, who wears his on a daily basis with the broken link dangling on the outside of his wrist.

“The bracelet catches the eye,” of Whites and Blacks alike. “Some of the younger Black guys think I’m on a home monitoring system,” Mr. Baker said.

Mr. Baker stated that he has received comments criticizing a product reminiscent of a negative key rings part of our history, and comments recognizing the importance the company mission, even a favorable comment from a “card-carrying member of the Ku Klux Klan.”

Mr. Baker, who tells people that he encounters that he’s “a run-away” from slavery, also encourages that “you have to set yourself apart from everybody.”

The company encompasses the Baker family: Gordon and Vera Baker, four sons, three daughters, a brother-in-law, and a close friend of the family.

The Ujaama corporation also produces t-shirts in various styles, baseball caps, lapel pins and coffee mugs, all with the freedom bracelet logo. Events such as Afram, the Juneteenth celebration and conventions promoting African-American awareness have served as vending opportunities for the company to promote their message.

Interested in receiving additional information about the freedom bracelet and other Ujaama products?necklaces Call Shawn Baker at 410-542-1006; Fax: 410-542-1442; E-mail: Ujaamal @ aol.com; or contact their website at www.welcome.to/ujaama.
