Sylvia Kilpatrick of Kinston spent Black Friday at Vernon Park Mall with her granddaughter, searching for the best holiday sales.
“I plan to buy toys this year for my granddaughter,” Kilpatrick said. “I should have all of my Christmas shopping done by next week.”
Kilpatrick took a break from shopping Friday morning to visit Santa Claus, who made his first appearance of the holiday season at the mall. Santa greeted children while others took a ride on the indoor train that runs in the mall.
Another Christmas shopper, Tiawanna Perry of Kinston, said she plans to buy clothes and shoes this season. Several shoppers at the mall also said they didn’t plan to start their holiday shopping until early December.
Belk department store at the mall opened at 4 a.m. Friday. Belk manager Bobby Wadleigh said his store handed out 250 gift cards when doors opened for customers.
“We had about 40 people waiting to get in,” Wadleigh said. “There has been steady business in the shoe and jewelry departments.”
Both Wal-Mart and Kmart stores in Kinston reported brisk business on Black Friday. K-Mart at North Queen Street opened at 6 a.m. for customers.
“There were about 150 people lined up outside at 4:30 a.m. ready to come inside,” Kmart manager Cynthia Fields said. “Electronics are real popular again this year.”
Fields said business seemed down Friday, as compared to last year’s Black Friday.
“Our sales are not where they need to be right now,” Fields said. “We hope sales will pick up before Christmas.”
The aisles at Wal-Mart were busy Friday afternoon as customers looked for the best sales. According to Wal-Mart manager Bruce Bannister, each Wal-Mart store in the nation released on the Internet a floor display of where Black Friday sales would be for customers.
“This is the first year that we have placed where the items would be on the Internet,” Bannister said. “Our Black Friday sales started at 5 a.m.”
Bannister said lines for sales began to form near midnight.
Business in downtown Kinston along Herritage and West Gordon Streets remained slow on Black Friday. Riverside Bicycles and Outdoor Sports owner Bert Statum said a majority of the downtown businesses opened at their regular hour.
This marks Statum’s fourth Black Friday. Statum said he didn’t have any customers visit his store Friday morning. Statum suggested that downtown business owners should collaborate more to attract holiday shoppers downtown.
“I don’t have the money to market and do commercials every hour,” Statum said.
Designs by Shelia was also open for Black Friday sales. Shelia Stroud opened the store in April. Stroud said she is optimistic about the new holiday shopping season. “November and December are usually good months for me,” Stroud said. “This is my first Black Friday downtown so we will see how we do.”
As with Kinston, shoppers nationwide went to stores looking for bargains on Black Friday. According to a National Retail Federation survey, about 134 million people said they planned to shop Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
“Regardless of what we’ve already seen these last few weeks in terms of promotions, retailers still have a few tricks up their sleeves to excite shoppers,” NRF President Tracy Mullin said. “With retailers fully aware that shoppers are looking for incredible deals, Americans can expect huge sales on popular items like toys, electronics and apparel.”
The survey showed that discount and department stores were likely to see the most business on Black Friday. Nearly 30 percent of those surveyed said they planned to shop online on Black Friday.
