Costume jewelry, baby teeth seized

Baby teeth were among the booty seized last week from a convicted felon who is a suspect in four home burglaries since December in the northern suburbs.

Robert Weaver, 52, was taken into custody Jan. 14 at a residence in Spring Garden.

Investigators from the Northern Regional Police Department, which covers Pine, Richland, Bradford Woods and Marshall, tipped off Pittsburgh police to the suspect’s whereabouts.

Northern Regional police Chief Robert Amann said a tracking device in a stolen computer led investigators to Mr. Weaver.

The investigation, started by Detectives Scott Rick and Jeffrey Hoffman, began after a burglary was reported Dec. 17 in Bradford Woods.

Much of what was stolen was costume jewelry, enough to cover four tables and the surface of every cabinet in one of Chief Amann’s offices.

Electronics, antique coins and some valuable jewelry also were seized. In one pouch police found a collection of baby teeth that a victim had saved.

Other break-ins were reported in the township Dec. 24 and Jan. 5, when a laptop computer was taken. The tracking device in the computer led investigators to a woman in Bellevue, and, eventually, to Mr. Weaver.

Two witnesses in January also told police the suspect drove a white cargo van.

A would-be victim said on Jan. 6 someone knocked on the door at his Marshall home. The resident said he was slow to answer the door, and he found the suspect peering through a window before fleeing.

The homeowner gave police a description of the suspect.

All of the burglaries were committed between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.

“Our two detectives hit the streets, and the investigation took them to Homestead, Green Tree, Bellevue” and other towns the suspect had been known to frequent, Chief Amann said.

Police believe Mr. Weaver could be a suspect in burglaries over the past two months in Bethel Park, Upper St. Clair, Ross and Franklin Park, as well New Alexandria, Westmoreland County.

The suspect was to be arraigned on charges that include burglary and receiving stolen property, police said.

Mr. Weaver was released from state prison in May after he served 15 years for burglary convictions.
