ALBERT P. PINTO was a great swimmer, but he learned lifesaving techniques for one simple reason: To protect his seven children.

The Pinto family seemed to always be in or around water, and Albert wanted his children to love the Wildwood beach as much as he did. But he was also aware of the dangers of the pounding surf.

"He didn’t trust the lifeguards," said his daughter, Barbara Matousch. "To watch him glide through the water was something to see.

"One time,Charm pendant, one of us got out too far and started flailing. Dad was fully clothed, but he ripped his watch off, took off his shoes, and beat the lifeguard to his son."

Albert Pinto, a safety engineer for insurance companies whose job was to visit plants in search of potential accidents, a man of many talents and interests and a Navy veteran, died Saturday of cancer. He was 79 and formerly lived in Philadelphia and Yeadon, Delaware County.

Albert taught his children many important lessons about life, but one that stays with Barbara has to do with swimming.

"If you’re ever in trouble in the water, just relax and tread water, he told us. So whenever I get into trouble, I calm down and metaphorically tread water until I feel strong enough to move on," she said.

Working for many years in the Loss Control Department of Aetna Insurance Co.,discount tiffany earrings, he often had to give speeches, which was not his favorite thing to do. He would practice in front of his children.

"Then he would turn the tables and have us stand in front of the family and give a small speech, tiffany money clips clearance," his daughter said. "His goal was to make us comfortable speaking in front of groups."

The Pinto home was full of music. Dad taught himself guitar and liked to play the songs of the Kingston Trio, Hank Williams and others. He also took art classes and taught himself Italian before traveling to the Abruzzi region of Italy at the age of 77 to see the land where his father grew up. He also visited Ireland.

He and his late wife, the former Barbara Winters, an actress and singer, loved to dance and could jitterbug with the best of them.

Albert was born in Philadelphia to Giuseppe and Marguerite Pinto. His father, a stonemason, was from Italy, and his mother was an Irish-American. Albert graduated from John Bartram High School in 1949, and later received an associate degree in engineering from Villanova University, which he attended at night.

After high school, he joined the Navy and was stationed in the States. He swam competitively on a Navy team.

He and his wife were married in 1955. She died in 2004.

As a child of the Depression, Albert got an early taste of hard work, delivering groceries for Hymie’s Market, which was below the family apartment in Kingsessing.

He also worked in carnivals during vacation time. In his early years, he worked for the old Baldwin Locomotive Works, the Pennsylvania Railroad and Cramp’s Shipyard as a machinist.

Albert used to entertain his children with stories about growing up in Kingsessing with guys he knew almost from infancy. They swam in Crum Creek and hung out in Wildwood in the summer.

They were members of a football team called the Termites in the Pop Warner league. Many of his childhood pals remained friends for the rest of their lives.

He was a voracious reader and enjoyed books on philosophy and theology and liked to ponder the meanings of things.

Albert was a charmer who had a sometimes silly wit that drew people to him. When he went into the hospital,Atlas charm bracelet, the doctors and nurses told the family, "He’s the cutest thing. We’re going to keep him here."

A friend said Albert was "a gentle man and a gentleman."

"He had a wonderfully warm personality and a very curious mind," said Barbara, who is also an actress who performs with the Scottish Rite Theater in Collingswood, N.J. "He was deeply patriotic. Once I was doing a show about the USO and wanted to pick his brains. He said how he and his friends looked up to the servicemen who came back from World War II. They were his heroes.

"He always believed that America is the greatest country in the world. ‘We’re producers, tiffany bangles for sale,’ he would say. ‘We make things, amazing ships and planes. When the world needed help, they came to America.’ "

Besides his daughter, he is survived by four sons, Albert, Thomas, Joseph and Matthew; two other daughters, Lisa Trucksess and Ann McCarney; a sister, Nancy Pinto Downs; and 23 grandchildren.

Services: Funeral Mass 11 a.m. tomorrow at St. Andrew’s Church, School Lane and Foss Avenue, Drexel Hill. Friends may call at 7 this evening at the Logan Funeral Home, 57 S. Eagle Rd., Havertown, and at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow. Burial will be in Ss. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Marple.

Prepare, organize, present; a fellow GPSoIo member once told me that life is no dress rehearsal. We have spent an incredible portion of our lives preparing for something great – something great for ourselves and for our families. Recall your decision to go to law school, the law school you chose, and the area of law that first interested you. We observed, trained, and learned to practice law. In doing this, we organized for ourselves an incredible journey of service to others – our clients. And as a result, we are in the presentation phase of life as we present ourselves to our clients. That’s it, a lawyer’s professional journey in a nutshell.

By analogy, we prepare, organize, and present every day as legal practitioners, just as we did with our life’s plan. However, discount tiffany, our preparation, organization, and presentation are focused and aided with specific tools to ensure that we communicate the clearest message. Whether we are giving an opening statement, providing a proposal to a client, or teaching search-and-seizure law to a law class, tiffany earrings on sale, the assistance of technological tools greatly enhances our goal of communicating the clearest message. Most of us rely heavily on Microsoft PowerPoint. I don’t profess to be an expert, but I have given literally hundreds of PowerPoint presentations. Similarly, I have seen hundreds of PowerPoint presentations. As life is no dress rehearsal, I offer to you some advice on presenting with PowerPoint.

First, as you gather your notes, understand that your PowerPoint presentation is not a substitute for your notes. On the contrary, each slide should only be a memoryjogger. I recommend usingthe rule of three – that is,tiffany money clip, limit each slide to three important points. Slides full of data detract from your presentation. If you have a multitude of must-have notes, imbed them in the PowerPoint as notes that only you can see in a paper copy of the entire presentation. I recently attended a PowerPoint presentation at the ABA Midyear Meeting in Orlando, thanksgiving gifts, Florida, and the gentleman presenting included in his slides actual paragraphs and multiple data points. He also included numerous bar graphs and pie charts. At one point, I simply wanted to leave and just obtain a copy of his slides to read on the airplane trip back home. His presentation was important, but it got buried in a data overload! If he had refined his presentation and used the rule of three, I might be able to recall his primary point. Instead, I only remember a garbled mess of facts and figures. Additionally, given the usually short period of time to present, overloading your slides will make you run through your presentation at Warp Factor Eight (that’s Star Trek lingo for fast). Speaking of speed, I recommend you limit your presentation – including questions and answers – to about 50 minutes. Any longer and you will lose your authence. Last, you have to know the room setup. Your data has to be clear, crisp, and readable to everyone in the room. The presentation I saw at Midyear could not be read by more than half of the room. The slides had too much information, and the screen was too far back. Additionally, the lighting was poor. Doing a PowerPoint dry run before a couple people will prove invaluable.

Another issue involving PowerPoint presentations concerns the content of the data presented. You cannot quickly jump into your presentation and expect your authence to stay with you. Use some type of attention getter. I have seen several people use a joke or picture to attract attention. However, be careful – this has to be done in good taste and has to be somewhat germane to your presentation. You must know your authence and their level of familiarity with your topic; ask questions early on to help you gauge their level of understanding. Next, you have to outline your presentation – like an opening statement. A simple introductory slide explaining your purpose and your intended outcome will give your audience a road map and enable them to better focus on your presentation. However, don’t spend too much time on the attention getter or the introductory slide. Remember your time constraints. Also, let your authence know that it is okay to ask you questions throughout the presentation. You should not be so tied to your presentation that you can’t take questions. They actually enhance your presentation.

And what about imbedded videos and pictures? The simple answer is yes. However, don’t overload your presentation. A couple pictures and one imbedded video for a 50-minute presentation is sufficient. And don’t put in a video simply because you like it. Make sure it is germane to your stated outcome and remember your authence. Similarly, graphs and charts are good, but use them judiciously. And remember, tiffany necklaces on sale, if your charts and graphs require you to stop and explain what is being depicted, they are too complex for your presentation. Keep it simple. Your choice of colors and labels is key in this area. Stay away from the teals, canary yellows, royal purples, etc. Reds, blues, and blacks are fine. And once again, make sure the authence can read your labels.

A note on handouts: This is an excellent practice! With PowerPoint, you can print handouts for your audience to follow and use to take notes. I recommend three slides per page for your handouts, and print them back to front on each paper. I once helped organize a conference on appellate practice. My staff had to get across the simple idea of vigilance in post-trial processing – a complicated area. We not only provided handouts with our slides, we also reproduced the presentation on CD. The comments we received were incredible. One person said, "Thanks for the note-taking sheets [handouts] . I found them very useful – they helped me to stay focused on what the speaker conveyed."

Lastly: the speaker. You are the key to an outstanding PowerPoint presentation. Presenting in any forum is a leadership challenge. Everything from how you dress to how you articulate will determine how well you are received. I don’t want to get into Public Speaking 101 , but here are a few simple reminders: Speak clearly and project. Eye contact is very important. Don’t talk to your slides; your authence needs to see your face. Make sure your outfit is conservative; loud clothing will distract. Don’t overuse a laser pointer either; you only need to use it a couple times if necessary. Don’t read your slides; assume your authence can read. Slides are memory joggers or notes for your presentation; don’t be tied to your notes. Don’t rush through your presentation; you are not selling a car or running an auction. Remember, you are dealing with technology and sometimes technology fails. Finally, relax; you are on display and you don’t want your authence coming away saying, "Wow, good information, but the presenter seemed nervous for some reason." Remember to practice, practice, practice. You should be very comfortable with your material and able to convey your stated outcome from your presentation.

Prepare, organize, present – this is what we do. And when we do it, it is a reflection of our professionalism as legal practitioners. Yes, you have technology to aid you, but the ultimate conveyer of knowledge is you, the speaker. Whether arguing before jury members or addressing your daughter’s fourth-grade class during Career Day, you are conveying a message with a stated point. How you do it and what you use to convey this point will define you as a professional for that authence. You must spend an adequate amount of time organizing your presentation, putting your best foot forward. You must prepare by practicing over and over, and you must present in a manner that will carry the day for your intended message. It seems simple, but even the best orators follow some of the principles and advice given in this article. Again, life is not a dress rehearsal. When you are on stage, all eyes are on you, and the small things become meaningful and lasting. Good luck with your presentations.

The town of Palm Beach will now be home to the first television series to highlight the things that make us beautiful. Entitled "Beauty Illustrated TV," the 13-part original series is planned to air on WEtv,earrings, and WEtv’s New York cable affiliate, Wedding Central, every Saturday at 9 AM.

Beauty Illustrated TV will compete with morning talk and reality shows as it engages in a common emotion with its viewers. "The goal of Beauty Illustrated TV is to entertain and educate an audience not only conscious about looking young, but also willing to take the necessary steps to actually prolong their youth, thanksgiving crafts gifts," says Erik Di Somma, President of The VLTRA Group and Executive Producer of the series.
The birth of a new medium in a time when it is most needed is no coincidence. In 2008, while researching ways to publicize his company’s anti-oxidant delivery technology,Bead bracelet, Di Somma encountered problems inherent to the beauty industry. "The industry has become too ambiguous for the average consumer to understand and too competitive to allow the proper publicity of real anti-aging technology," Di Somma explains. "We designed this series to address these issues." As a former health show and news producer, Di Somma believes the series can be a functional tool in beauty product marketing.

Beauty Illustrated TV is a collaborative effort between The VLTRA Group, Inc., a Georgia Corporation focusing on skin-care research and Discover Entertainment Group, LLC, a Florida independent production company. Melody Holcomb, cosmetics model and host of the series, gives the advice needed in helping viewers make more informed purchasing decisions.

A year after Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger cleaned house at a regulatory board that routinely took more than three years to take action on nurses accused of violations, an Agoura Hills woman has been hired to help the board complete its path to reform.

Tricia West, a nurse and legal consultant with 30 years experience reviewing cases involving alleged medical violations, will serve as the executive officer for the California Board of Registered Nursing. Her responsibilities will include making sure investigations and enforcement take no longer than an average of 18 months to protect the public from nurses who make medical mistakes, abuse substances or commit other violations.

"I took the job because I saw it as an opportunity to improve patient care for the state of California," said West, pledging to continue a transformation effort that has brought increased funding, changes in the way investigations are processed and the hiring of more investigators. She noted that nationwide 200,000 Americans die each year from errors committed by healthcare professionals.

"Why the public is not more up in arms and paying attention to that, I don’t get it," she said.

Her new position, which begins Sept. 15, will carry considerable scrutiny. A year ago, the Los Angeles Times and nonprofit news organization ProPublica published stories showing the board’s enforcement process took an average of three years and five months. Nurses accused of being incompetent and dangerous continued to work.

A day after the investigation was published, Schwarzenegger fired three board members in the beginning of a purge that led to seven new people on the nine-seat board. The board’s longtime executive officer, cuff Links, Ruth Ann Terry, resigned.

West said she has no inside information on what happened but wondered at the time if the key problem was lack of resources.

"I wondered whether they were being asked to do a job but yet their hands were being tied behind them," she said.

The nursing board controversies revealed that other state boards that regulate healthcare professions struggle with the same issue of completing investigations promptly. Schwarzenegger’s calls for widespread reform is bringing $12.7 million in new funding to the healthcare regulatory boards from increased licensing fees. The new nursing board is in the process of hiring 37 people in positions related to investigations.

And while the money shows a commitment to change, nursing board staff are still mandated by the governor to take furlough days, though their budget comes not from the general fund but the licensing charges, said Julianne D’Angelo Fellmeth, administrative director of the Center of Public Interest Law at the University of San Diego School of Law.

"It doesn’t help to increase your licensing fees so you can increase the staff but then make them sit home for three days a month," she said.

With or without the furlough days, necklaces, the mandate for reform and the attention created by the newspaper investigation carries big pressure for West and other leaders of regulatory boards,Bead bracelet, said Fellmeth, who follows several of the state’s boards.

"They’re expecting her to improve that enforcement system and all the problems have been laid out very,Charm pendant, very clearly," Fellmeth said.

West acknowledges her new job is a hot seat.

"Honestly,Atlas charm bracelet, if they’re looking for the status quo, they’re looking at the wrong person," she said.

West is a registered nurse who is CEO and president of PJ West & Associates, a legal consulting firm that testifies in cases involving malpractice, personal injury and Medicare fraud. She’s served as an expert witness on behalf of the nursing board but, depending on the evidence presented, has also testified for nurses brought up before the board.

The search for a new executive officer took the nursing board a year with an existing staff member, Louise Bailey, serving as interim executive officer. Board President Ann Boynton said West was selected because of her experience running a business and managing staff as well as her career’s focus on figuring out how healthcare problems happened and how they could have been fixed.

Cyndie Cole, chief nurse executive for the Ventura County Health Care Agency, said that in the past hospitals ran the risk of hiring nurses without knowing their history. The regulatory system is already providing more information and doing it quicker, she said.

But Cole wants more information that allows employers to know if a nurse has been accused in the past. And whatever additional changes the board and its new executive officer make, they will be scrutinized.

"Absolutely," Cole said. "Without a doubt people are watching."

The Grand Forks Red River girls swimming team turned in its best state meet finish in school history last season when the Roughriders finished fourth. Red River also finished fourth in 1980.,pendants

That makes Red River’s goal this season seem more lofty.

The Riders want to challenge for the state championship.

"These girls have the goal of winning state,Charm pendant," said Bryan Walls, who coaches both Red River and Grand Forks Central. "This is the first time for Red River where we can sit here and say that the chance is there."

The chance is there for the Riders because of a talented senior class consisting of Erin Grabanski, Mirna Kojic, Jamie Skavlem and Courtney Fisk.

"It’s pretty crazy Red River has a shot with pretty much just six kids, money clips," Walls said. "That shows how good they are and how high they can place. They’ve had a lot of talent and dedication over the years."

Apart from the seniors, Red River will also rely heavily on junior Addy DiCristina and sophomore Breanna Schmidt.

"Red River has never won state, so to win state would be a nice sendoff for our senior season," Grabanski said. "We’ve all been training super hard."

Red River had three athletes finish in the top four at the state meet. Grabanski was third at the state meet in the 200 individual medley, while Kojic was fourth in the 50 freestyle and Skavlem was third in the 100 backstroke.

The Riders didn’t feature an individual state champion last season, but Red River is hoping to change that this year.

"We feel like we all have a chance to win an event," Fisk said. "If we win a few events, cuff Links, we might be able to reach our team goals."

Walls said the Riders aren’t the favorites to win the state title. He said Bismarck Century is the team to beat.

"It’s nice to see the girls have the opportunity (to challenge for a state title)," Walls said. "It’s not going to be easy, but it’s exciting."

Scope of this research:

– Market expenditure, inflation and volume growth forecast to 2014 as well as data from the last ten years

Research and analysis highlights:

Despite improved growth,Bead bracelet, 2010 will continue to be tough. We expect higher taxes and weak wage growth to result in consumer reluctance to spend. Inflation has been the main contributor to growth, with VAT and increased cost prices pushing up costs.

Cost price pressures will push up the selling prices of items as retailers will not be able to absorb production cost increases without taking significant hits on margins. Retailers will try to minimise inflation by continuing to negotiate harder with suppliers and adding detail to garments.

Retailers will need to make the store environment, customer service and shopping experience exciting and enjoyable to entice people into stores and encourage discretionary purchases. While creating an emotional attachment with consumers through communication and returning to traditional values will encourage return visits.

FIRST LADY MICHELLE OBAMA DELIVERS REMARKS AT “LET’S MOVE” EVENT Return to Tiffany Oval tag key ring NEW HAMPSHIRE ESTATES ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, AS RELEASED BY THE WHITE HOUSE

MAY 19, 2010

SPEAKERS: FIRST LADY MICHELLE OBAMA

FIRST LADY OF MEXICO MARGARITA ZAVALA

[*] OBAMA: Thank you all for sharing. I mean, one of the reasons we came to this school is because of what you all are doing here. I don’t know if you know, but…

STUDENT: Can you come to Field Day?

OBAMA: You know, I’ll see. I’ll see what day it is and see what else is going on, Return to Tiffany Oval tag pendant it sounds like a lot of fun, and maybe I could wear jeans and sneakers and really get under the house.

But one of the things that I’m doing as First Lady is making sure that kids are healthy and eating right and getting the right kind of exercise, which is why what you’re doing here at your school — the fact that you’ve got such wonderful teachers who are focused on your health and how you eat. We’re going to go into the lunch room, and I don’t know if we’re going to meet with you guys, but some of your classmates.

And we’re going to see how you eat family-style and how you’re learning about how your bodies work, and how exercise is so important for your heart and the system all works together, and how food blends into that, because all of that is going to help you all develop really good habits so that when you’re adults you’re eating healthy. And if you decide to have kids of your own, you can teach them these habits.

But it’s so — you are so blessed to be in a school like this that’s focusing and giving you this kind of information, and making it fun, right, because what you see is that exercise and play — that’s all exercise is, it’s a bunch of play. It’s just games. But you get your heart moving, and you’ve got to do that.

What they say is that kids should get 60 minutes of exercise every day. And you Square cuff links got how many minutes were we…

MR. RYAN: About 25.

OBAMA: You just got 25 minutes already. So if you went home and ran around for another 25 minutes, or rode your bike, and you did that every day, you’d be doing exactly what you need to do as a kid. But you’re fortunate — kind of fitness — but you’re fortunate to be able to get that stuff here at this school.

What do you have to say, sweetie?

STUDENT: When I go somewhere with my mom, I always bring an apple to eat.

OBAMA: That’s right. See, that’s a good example of healthy snacks, right, because you don’t have to have a bag of chips. You don’t have to have — what?

STUDENT: Junk food.

OBAMA: Or junk food, right. You can have nuts or raisins, an apple, Tiffany & Co bangle?

STUDENT: Banana.

OBAMA: Banana, that’s right.

STUDENT: Even I ride my bike…

OBAMA: That’s great. That’s all good stuff.

STUDENT: (inaudible) every weekend (inaudible) when I go to my grandma’s house, we — they play the Wii…

OBAMA: The Wii Fit? Yep, Malia and Sasha have that, too.

STUDENT: — go out and ride our bikes.

OBAMA: That’s it. That’s exactly what…

STUDENT: That’s why I wanted (inaudible)

OBAMA: That’s great. That’s exactly what you should be doing.

What, sweetie?

STUDENT: Does your daughters do exercise?

OBAMA: They do. They do it at school like you do, and they do it at home, because you know what…

STUDENT: Do they ride their bikes?

OBAMA: They do. Yeah, they ride their bikes, they do.

STUDENT: Do you do exercise?

OBAMA: I do. I exercise every single day, unless I’m really…

STUDENT: Barack Obama?

OBAMA: He exercises every morning, every single morning.

STUDENT: I know what his favorite sport is.

OBAMA: What’s his favorite sport?

STUDENT: Basketball.

OBAMA: Basketball, oh yeah. And if he can play that, he’d play that every day.

STUDENT: Mrs. Obama, I have a question.

OBAMA: What’s your question?

STUDENT: I have a question. My mom said — my mom said that — I think that she says that Barack Obama is taking everybody away that doesn’t have papers. OBAMA: Yeah, well, that’s something that we have to work on, right, to make sure that people can be here with the right kind of papers, right? That’s exactly right.

STUDENT: But my mom doesn’t have…

(CROSSTALK)

OBAMA: Yeah, well, we have to work on that. We have to fix that, and that everybody has got to work together in Congress to make sure that that happens. That’s right.

OBAMA: Yes, sweetie.

STUDENT: My mom went to where you all vote. It was so cold. She was standing and she was sleepy.

OBAMA: Oh, but she stayed there and voted, right? That’s good. Tiffany 1837 bangle you’ve got to work hard to vote, you know? That’s part of what we call our democracy, right, that you have to vote to make sure that the people who are in office making laws are representing what you think. And sometimes it’s not easy to vote. Sometimes you have to stand in lines. And that means when you get older, you’re going to vote every time, right, even if it means standing in line in the cold, right? That’s a good thing.

All right, sweetie.

STUDENT: (inaudible)

ZAVALA: I can’t hear you.

OBAMA: Speak up.

STUDENT: I hope you teach your daughters about fitness and health.

OBAMA: We do, we do. At our house, we talk about fitness a lot. One plays soccer, one plays basketball. Both of them take tennis. They go to the gym on a regular basis. They ride their bikes. Being active is part — because the thing about being active is that it helps you with this muscle, too. That’s the most important thing about exercise.

It’s like you wouldn’t think — you’d think that exercise is just about muscles in your arms and legs, but the most important muscle that exercise works is your brain muscle, this thing in your head, you know, and that’s why we know it’s important for kids to eat healthy and get a lot of exercise, because you all learn better, right, because when you come out here for 25 minutes and you run around, then you’re ready to go back to school and in your classrooms and do what?

STUDENT: Exercise.

OBAMA: No, when you go back to the…

STUDENT: Learn.

OBAMA: Listen and learn, that’s right.

But now I’m going to turn it over to Mrs. Zavala who I know might want to say a few words just to you all, as well.

ZAVALA: Thank you. Thank you very much. The President Felipe Calderon is Tiffany 1837 Double cross pendant president of Mexico. And we have three kids. Maria is 13 years old and she likes ballet.

OBAMA: Ballet.

STUDENT: I like ballet.

ZAVALA: And Luis Felipe is the second one, and he loves soccer. It’s a wonderful…

OBAMA: He wants to — how old is Felipe?

ZAVALA: Felipe is 11.

STUDENT: How old is Maria? And Maria, 13. And Juan Pablo…

OBAMA: She has a daughter.

ZAVALA: … he’s seven, and he likes karate.

STUDENT: I like karate.

(LAUGHTER)

ZAVALA: I want to speak in Spanish. I know somebody can understand me. She is going to translate for me and for you.

(THROUGH TRANSLATOR): In Mexico we’re also very preoccupied, the adults, and also that children throughout the world will exercise and be healthy so they can learn better. Because as Mrs. Michelle Obama says, exercise is important for the body and for the brain. It’s important to learn mathematics, history, but also to do exercise so you can learn better.

Michelle and I want your entire generation, our children — we want them to grow Tiffany 1837 Hoop earrings happy and healthy.

But that also depends a lot on you — that you exercise every day and you eat in a more healthy way and you know what foods are healthy and what foods aren’t. And if you prefer the healthy food, it will be better for the world for you to grow healthy and happy, and it’ll be good for the world.

Thank you very much.

Thailand’s exports posted their first increase in 13 months in November, driven by rising shipments of key agricultural and industrial goods as the global economic recovery took hold.

The US dollar value of exports rose 17.2 percent from a year earlier to $13.84 billion. The baht tiffany jewelry value rose 14.1 percent to 459.34 billion, reflecting the local currency’s strength.

But export values were down from October by almost $1 billion, about 7 percent. November’s year-on-year improvement is also against poor conditions in November 2008, when Bangkok’s airports were closed for the last six days of the month by anti-government protesters.

Despite easing growth from October, Commerce Minister Porntiva Nakasai said the prospect was very promising.

“If we can achieve $13 billion in export value this month, our contraction for the whole year will be 15 percent,” she said.

Mrs Porntiva believes exports could expand 10 percent to 15 percent next year, albeit from a very low base this year. The ministry expects exports of $150 billion this year and about $170 billion next year.

Srirat Rastapana, director-general of the Export Promotion Department, said that despite a likely 15 percent export contraction this year, Thailand’s exports to main markets such as the US, Europe and Japan remained on the rise, reflecting strong competitiveness and the ability of Thai exporters to adjust.

The department forecast agricultural and processed food would do well next year, with automobiles, electrical appliances, tiffany cufflinks and home furnishings expected to see increases even though some observers remain wary about the health of the global recovery.

The value of imports fell 2.2 percent in November to $12.78 billion, against a drop of 17.5 percent in October. The trade surplus narrowed to $1.06 billion from $1.76 billion in October.

Exports for the first 11 months were down 17 percent to $137.95 billion, and 13.4 percent in baht terms. Import value fell 28.9 percent to $119.37 billion, leaving a trade surplus of $18.57 billion.

Dusit Nontanakorn, chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, said the rise in November exports was not surprising, as signs of resuming purchase orders had become visible since October. He also noted the low base effect compared with November last year.

Despite the promising outlook, Mr Dusit said the private sector remains concerned over political tension, the Map Ta Phut issue and transparency in the government’s spending under the Thai Khem Kaeng stimulus programme.

Somphob Manarungsan, an economist at Chulalongkorn University, said China could have been a major contributor to November’s tiffany money clips.

“China’s imports rose by 27 percent in November, not only from Thailand but also Korea, Taiwan and Japan,” he said.
